About: NThe Bronx Defenders provides comprehensive and compassionate criminal defense, family defense, civil legal services, social work support, and advocacy to low-income residents of the Bronx. From working one-on-one with clients to community organizing to impact litigation, The Bronx Defenders is a community resource and a force for systemic change.
The Bronx Defenders seeks a full-time, 10-week fellow for the team responsible for redesigning our reception and community intake services. Of the roughly 100 people coming through reception daily, some are current or former clients and others are new to The Bronx Defenders. The Reception and Community Intake Technology Fellowship provides a law student with the opportunity to work collaboratively to improve access to justice within an organization known for innovation in public defense. The fellow will collect data on services provided and new programmatic needs and explore methods to allow reception and community intake staff to focus on the greatest impact activities.
The fellow will:
learn about existing systems in use at reception and community intake
observe and document current services
assist in identifying client concerns and potential referrals to our Criminal, Civil, Family or Immigration practice areas
research and write recommendations for process and system improvements
attend both the ATJ technology training and BxD holistic defense intern training
complete other duties determined in part by the fellow's areas of interest and relevant skills.
Currently enrolled and in good standing at an accredited law school
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Spanish language skills preferred
Excellent legal research and listening skills
Ability to effectively navigate client/community concerns and communicate legal issues
Commitment to the mission and vision of The Bronx Defenders
Ability to think about the big picture and remember details
Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize and manage tasks
