Southeast louisiana legal services
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
About: Southeast Louisiana Legal Services' mission is to seek justice for low-income people in Louisiana by enforcing and defending their legal rights through civil legal aid, advocacy and community education.
SLLS seeks a 10-week Access to Justice Technology Fellow to join a team dedicating to overhauling LouisianaLawHelp.org, the state's free online legal information website aimed at low-income people. The goal is to modernize the site's visual elements and navigation, streamline the site's content, and optimize the site for mobile users. The Legal Services Corporation awarded SLLS a Technology Initiative Grant (TIG) to support the website overhaul project
The ATJ Tech Fellow's work is a key component of this overall effort. The ATJ Tech Fellow will enjoy working in a civil legal aid program from the creative and unique perspective of using technology to extend the reach of traditional legal services. LouisianaLawHelp.org powers our commitment to bridging the justice gap by connecting people with information about civil legal aid, pro bono services, and by broadcasting information and resources about basic legal issues.
The ATJ Tech Fellow's duties will focus on the site user's experience. The ATJ Tech Fellow will work with SLLS on any or all of the following projects:
- Conducting user testing of prospective site designs and site elements among prospective end users, Access to Justice Community members, and site users from social service agencies and/or libraries. These projects may include "A/B" testing or other methods to find out which layout options and design elements make the site easy to use.
- The ATJ Tech Fellow's testing efforts will likely include but are not limited to: getting user feedback about which website symbols or icons work best; whether text labels for some features work better than icons, symbols, or other images; and which layouts and navigation paths are easiest for people to use.
- As time permits, the Fellow will work on cataloguing, winnowing and reformatting content to maximize the site's impact for mobile users.
- Other duties as assigned by the website coordinator.
