New Mexico Legal Aid provides high quality advocacy and legal representation to eligible and low income individuals and families to help them help themselves towards safer, more stable and healthier futures.
New Mexico Legal Aid seeks a full-time, 10-week fellow to be part of the team responsible for NMLA's mobile and remote access technology/virtual practice. New Mexico Legal Aid has invested heavily in mobile and remote access technologies to increase its capacity to deliver services across New Mexico's huge geographic territory, especially to meet the need for urban-based staff to meaningfully communicate with and assist clients in distant rural communities. However, the evolving "virtual practice" systems at NMLA, including Skype videoconferencing and a core Office 365 environment, are still significantly underutilized and not adequately integrated into everyday practice. Challenges include varying technology skill levels among staff, volunteer lawyers, and clients; and lack of adequate knowledge management tools so that staff and volunteers can more easily find and understand how to use the tools and systems that are available. The ATJ tech fellow will help NMLA continue development of this mobile and remote access technology/virtual practice environment, working with our senior management staff and technology partners to better organize, configure and update relevant software; to develop better training and support for system users, including clients; and to help NMLA with evaluation and strategic planning for its technology systems and goal.
Assess current systems, software and practices that support mobile/remote access/virtual practice strategies; recommend and implement changes, reconfigurations, security improvements and upgrades that will strengthen these systems; develop and implement training and support programs for staff, volunteer and client users; evaluate effectiveness and outcomes achieved with current systems, and assist NMLA with strategic planning for future development.
