Legal Services NYC (Justfix nyc)
Location: New York, New York
About: Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) fights poverty and seeks racial, social, and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. LSNYC is the largest civil legal services provider in the country. Our neighborhood-based offices and outreach sites across all five boroughs help more than 80,000 New Yorkers annually.
Legal Services NYC’s TIG project is a collaboration between LSNYC, JustFix.nyc, and Pro Bono Net (PBN) to integrate digital tools and other technology into LSNYC’s Housing Repair and Harassment clinics to support LSNYC clients and pro se tenants outside of the clinics seeking repairs and/or facing harassment. The goal of this partnership is to connect JustFix.nyc with PBN’s LawHelp Interactive-powered HP Action document assembly form to create a streamlined user experience for pro se tenants filing HP Actions for repairs. This project will greatly enhance the ability of LSNYC to support tenants in need of repairs and/or facing landlord harassment as well as assist pro se litigants to navigate the court process on their own.
LSNYC seeks a full-time, 10-week fellow who would work with staff at LSNYC, JustFix.nyc and Pro Bono Net to match and integrate the new technologies developed under the TIG with different aspects of LSNYC’s housing practice, in particular our repair and harassment clinics for pro se litigants, but also with our outreach efforts, our work with grass roots community organizations, and our multi-tenant affirmative building litigation.
The Fellow would work with staff at LSNYC, Just Fix NYC and Pro Bono Net to integrate the new technologies developed under the TIG with different aspects of LSNYC’s housing practice focusing on our repair and harassment clinics for pro se litigants, but also with our outreach efforts, work with grass roots community organizations, and our multi-tenant affirmative building litigation. To this end, the Fellow would also develop informative materials, scripts and other ways of introducing LSNYC staff, and possibly other legal services groups and community organization to ways of using these new programs to help tenants. If time permits, the Fellow may also conduct some focus groups and training sessions so that we can get user feedback and explore various ways of using the digital tools in group settings.
One of major objectives of this project is to build awareness and adoption of the LSNYC/ JustFix.nyc /LawHelp Interactive solutions among pro se litigants and other legal services organizations and community groups who work with low-income tenants who are at risk of displacement. The fellow’s proposed work would greatly assist in these efforts.
